La Paz & Balandra Beach, Mexico

After Loreto, we moved to La Paz, the capital and largest city in Baja California Sur. We stayed at Campestre Maranatha, an RV park that rivals any nice RV park in the US. It had a pool and an onsite cafe but my favorite amenity was the onsite laundry.

Campestre Maranatha

One afternoon we drove into town to walk along the Malecón. We were excited that we were in town during the first half of Carnaval, the week-long celebration leading up to Fat Tuesday. Then we were disappointed to find out that the parades and main events were only during the last 3 days when we’d already be gone.

We also walked around the center plaza to visit the cathedral and art museum.

The main reason we decided to stay in La Paz was to see Balandra Beach, which is often listed as the most beautiful beach in Mexico. It’s protected and both the number of people and the hours you are allowed to stay are limited and strictly enforced. Unfortunately, the day we decided to visit was cloudy and cold.

The unique thing about Balandra is that it is made up of a couple of very shallow bays that you can walk around in. We were surprised that we ended up walking ~3 miles in water up to our ankles and calves that afternoon.

Next up is our southernmost stop in Baja California Sur!
