Georgia’s Golden Isles
Not far from Georgia’s southern border are the Golden Isles, barrier islands which include St. Simons, Jekyll, and the exclusive Sea Island, where only residents and resort guests are allowed. There is a state park campground on Jekyll that doesn’t get the greatest online reviews, so we decided to stay at Blythe Island Regional Park in Brunswick. Blythe Island Regional Park is a gem, with spacious full-hookup sites at a reasonable rate. And interestingly, the park employees have pet bunnies living there, which added some excitement to our daily campground walks. Heading East: Scottsbluff, NE & Winterset, IA
Neither Nebraska nor Iowa is probably on anyone’s travel bucket list unless you want to visit every state like we do. They were both new states for us on a new route back across the country as we headed back to NC. Scottsbluff (the city) and Scotts Bluff (the National Monument) in western Nebraska was the most interesting place we could get to in one drive day from our previous location in Ridgway, Colorado. Ajo, AZ & Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument
From Tucson, we made our way further into the heart of the Sonoran Desert. We had some BLM boondocking land chosen a couple of miles south of the tiny town of Ajo, Arizona, on Darby Well Road. This location would put us within a half-hour drive to Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument. Ajo, a former mining town, is surrounded by millions of acres of federal land (BLM, NPS, and the Cabeza Prieta National Wildlife Refuge) and the tribal land of the Tohono O’odham Nation.
