Portage Valley Boondocking

We had a gloomy rainy week in Portage Valley, but I won’t complain. As I write, the town of Jasper and Jasper NP in Alberta are burning in a horrendous wildfire, the Alaska Highway is closed in both directions in BC due to flooding and washout, and the road in and out of Skagway in SE Alaska is closed in both directions due to a landslide. We’ve been incredibly fortunate so far.

Portage Valley is a small part of the almost 7 million-acre Chugach National Forest that stretches from the Kenai Peninsula to the Copper River Delta past Valdez.

We were about 15 minutes from the Turnagain Arm, so we went to see surfers catching the bore tide.

Only 1 of more than 10 surfers caught the wave!

And we took a couple of ~2-mile hikes near our boondocking spot after work. We did the Byron Glacier Trail, which had blue ice.

And the Trail of Blue Ice that only had blue water?!

We’re now in Alaska’s rainy season of July and August. A big storm came through on the weekend. We had sworn we wouldn’t let the rain stop us, but we did. We hardly left our ~225 sqft for 3 days and spent our time watching the gulls and watching Michael fix things.

Next up is the highlight of our summer in Alaska, a day trip to Katmai National Park!

Excellent! Was Michael actually able to fix the drill or did the cat end up doing it? I love the blue ice.

He did fix it! With Cody’s help of course. I don’t think I’d ever get tired of seeing glaciers.

Even with the rain Alaska is beautiful!
Love the photo of Cody watching Michael over his shoulder:)
