RVing NYC

NYC is not exactly a top RV destination, but there are a couple of options, and we found one that worked well for us. Croton Point Park, situated between the Hudson River and a Metro North station in Croton-on-Hudson, has reasonable rates and full hookups. From there it’s an hour long train ride to Grand Central terminal.

Just don’t take an RV on any road labeled a Parkway, which most seem to be in this area. They aren’t allowed. Also, cats aren’t allowed at Croton Point Park, so we had to sneak Cody in.

There are a lot of cute historic towns along the Hudson River. One day we walked around nearby Sleepy Hollow, the setting of the Headless Horseman. That little town was hoppin’ in October, with a lot of Halloween themed things to do.

We had been to NYC once previously during December, but it was freezing and we spent most of our time indoors. This time, in mid-October, the weather was perfect.

We spent our 2 weekend days riding the train into the city. On the first day we started in Brooklyn so that we could walk across the bridge back toward Manhattan. We got a bagel and took photos from the roof of the Time Out Market.

We also found that Instagram famous spot where you can see the Empire State Building framed by the Manhattan Bridge framed by buildings.

Once we were back in Manhattan, we started our own self guided food tour that lasted 2 days. We walked through Chinatown and had soup dumplings at Joe’s Shanghai. Next, we headed to Katz’s, but the line was crazy long so we moved on. We saw the Tenement Museum, which we had visited on our first trip and highly recommend.

We headed to that corner in the West Village that has several highly rated pizza places. After some deliberation, we tried L’industrie and Mama’s Too. We walked through Chelsea Market and got on the High Line, a former rail line that has been turned into a walking path with art and gardens, and walked all the way up to Hudson Yards.

By then it was time to eat again. We decided to go back to Katz’s and see if the line was shorter and it was! We shared a pastrami sandwich, followed by cannoli and cheesecake in Little Italy.

The next morning we walked around Central Park for a couple hours.

We visited St. Patrick’s and the library, had lunch at Los Tacos no1, and went to Other Half Brewing.

We were really looking forward to seeing a musical and chose the Maybe Happy Ending matinee at the Belasco Theatre, which won several Tonys this year. Our last foodie stop of the weekend was noodles from Xi’an Famous Foods.

We’ve concluded that NYC can be a fantastic RV destination.

We’ll be in western NC with our family for most of the rest of the year!

Maybe Happy Ending recently changed out some of the actors. Did you enjoy Maybe Happy Ending and do you know if you saw the new lineup of actors?

We loved MHE!! Very happy with our choice to see it, I should have mentioned that! We saw the original Claire, but the temporary replacement of Oliver. I believe the original Oliver, who won Best Leading Actor this year, is back on the show now.

The last time I was in N.Y. my girlfriend took me to the hi-line. (years ago) What a great idea it was. I understand that now it has lots more vendors. You two are really bringing up some wonderful memories for me. Keep on r.v. ing.
The world has so many fabulous places to see.

Glad we’re bringing up good memories! Yes, we were on the High Line in December 2012 when it hadn’t been open very long and was empty. Very different experience this time – it was packed! We hope to keep RVing. We keep checking things off, but our list never gets any shorter 🙂
