The Backstory

How did we get here, living and traveling full time in a 250sqft house on wheels?!

We’ve always loved to travel. We realized early on that we were happiest when we were out experiencing the world around us, particularly nature, so we made that a priority. The main problem was that there never seemed to be enough time. After using 2 weeks of vacation time on an international trip almost every year there was no time left for exploring our own US of A.

Exploring the jungle in Tulum, Mexico in 2019.
River tracing in Taroko Natl Park, Taiwan in 2018.
Hiking the Great Wall of China in 2018.
Visiting Fushimi Inari in Kyoto, Japan in 2017.

We were also no strangers to camping or RVing. We started out tent camping early on in our marriage. Later, when we got older and couldn’t make it through the night without peeing, we decided to upgrade to a small travel trailer. Unfortunately, the furthest we ever seemed to make it away for the weekend was to one of two state parks located less than an hour from our house. The plan was that one day when we retired, we would full-time RV travel. Well, you know what they say about having a plan…

In 2018, Michael started a new position at work that shifted his responsibilities to be mainly computer and phone-based. He immediately realized that, in theory, there was no reason he couldn’t do his job remotely…and from an RV. And because his boss and the company he works for is so awesome, they gave us a thumbs up!

Our goal was to start in 2020 and we analyzed and reanalyzed from every angle, because well that’s what we do. After all, this would mean leaving a city that we loved and located near 2 of our 3 siblings (plus their kids), selling our first and only house that was almost paid off, and me resigning from a near-perfect job of 16 years. There were a lot of reasons to not. But, in the end, how could we give up this opportunity for an epic adventure?

We chose to go with a motorhome because of high build quality and ease of setting up and tearing down “camp”. We fell in love with this 20-year-old 40ft diesel pusher. It was so spacious that downsizing was not even that hard. Our house sold quickly at the beginning of March and we moved in and headed west to visit family. Things were going too well, it seemed. The story of our rig changeup is in the next post.

House sold and moving into our first full time rig.
Good bye, house. We are so glad you have sweet new owners.
