Catching Up: Hilton Head, SC to Shipshewana, IN

Well, somehow it’s the end of July, and our blog is still stuck in mid-May, so it’s time to catch up!

After leaving the Georgia mountains in May, we went to Hilton Head National RV Resort for a Brinkley RV Rally. This was actually our second rally, as we attended one at Talona Ridge in Ellijay, GA last fall. We’re still undecided about how much we enjoy these, but it is a good time to get some maintenance and TLC on our rig, so I keep signing up for them.

We did like Hilton Head National, which, contrary to most RV parks that call themselves resorts, actually is one.

While there, Michael’s Aunt Bern and Uncle Craig treated us to a yummy Italian dinner at Joelle.

After Hilton Head, we moved to western NC and spent a lot of time with our family. We celebrated Memorial Day at Theresa and Ed’s. They have the best neighbors who rotate hosting everyone for pool parties/cookouts. We also celebrated my mom’s birthday, which was made extra special by John and Adam visiting.

We had fun going to an Atlanta Braves game for family night with the company Michael works for. On the way back, we stopped at a couple of WNC waterfalls, including Upper Whitewater Falls (the highest east of the Rockies at 411 ft), shown below.

Then, in mid-June, we went to Italy with Michael’s family! That needs its own blog post, coming up next.

We spent the July 4th holiday in Cincinnati with Michael’s college friends, Matt and Meg. After a long travel day, we stopped into Jungle Jim’s grocery store, and then had Cincinnati-style chili for dinner. Unfortunately, the chili made me feel unwell, which I know is surprising from the looks of it. I blame that for not taking any photos the next day; however, we still had a fantastic visit and pool day.

Finally, we rolled into the RV park at the Shipshewana RV Service Center in northern Indiana to get one of our slides adjusted, our brakes checked, and our roof resealed. They are close to the Brinkley factory and have extensive experience with them, and we were happy with our service there.

According to the internet, Shipshewana is the 3rd largest Amish settlement in the US. I specifically chose our campsite to back up to the road so that we could watch all the buggies go by all week. The photo below is the buggy parking area at the grocery store.

We’re currently in Michigan. We plan to explore some of the areas around Lake Michigan and Lake Superior for the rest of the summer, as long as we don’t get smoked out!
