Door County, WI

Door County is on a small peninsula in northern Wisconsin surrounded by Green Bay and Lake Michigan. It’s known for its scenic shoreline, orchards, and small towns. We originally planned a 2 week stay at HTR Door Country Campground in Egg Harbor.

You won’t find any chain restaurants or hotels north of Sturgeon Bay, so it’s funny that we ended up in a corporate chain RV park. There are several state park campgrounds on the peninsula, but I wasn’t sure if we would fit or have enough internet signal for work. But the RV park was nice and the location was perfect for exploring the towns of Egg Harbor, Fish Creek, Ephraim, and Sister Bay.

Door County is particularly known for its cherries but during our mid-September visit apple season was in full swing. My favorite thing about the RV park was the walking path to Wood Orchard Market, which we visited several times and bought a lot of yummy cherry and apple items.

As soon as we arrived we drove up to Sister Bay because I wanted to make sure I saw the goats on the roof at Al Johnson’s Swedish restaurant, because well, there are goats on the roof. Unfortunately, it was the end of the day for them, so they were all gathered at the exit. The patios in town were packed with people watching the Packers/Vikings game so we joined in at Wild Tomato and had an excellent pizza.

One evening we went over to the quieter Lake Michigan side of the peninsula for a walk at Cave Point County Park.

I spent most of the week trying to coordinate getting our washing machine fixed. We ended up deciding to leave a week early and go all the way to our RV dealer near Indianapolis.

Before we left Michael was able to take a day off work so we still got the chance to explore. We spent the morning at Peninsula State Park where we went to the top of Eagle Tower and hiked the Bluff trail.

The Bluff trail goes along part of the Niagara Escarpment, a formation that stretches all the way from Niagara Falls, through Michigan’s UP, and into Door County.

Afterward, we walked around the harbor and shops in Fish Creek. We saw several places advertising fish boils, which is something we’ll attend if we ever make it back to the area.

We also tried the delicious goat milk gelato from Door County Creamery and went to Peach Barn Brewery which has live music daily on their lawn.

We loved Door County and could have easily spent a month there. But for now, next up is Indiana Dunes National Park!
