Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park, MI

Voyageurs National Park in northern Minnesota was our turn around point this summer and on Labor Day we started our slow trek south.

Our first stop was a return to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula because this year’s trip through the UP wouldn’t have been complete if we didn’t see the Porcupine Mountains. Yes, also known as The Porkies, there are mountains in Michigan and they are even older than the Appalachians! We stayed at Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park in an absolutely beautiful Lake Superior waterfront campsite.

On the following Saturday we set out to explore the park, which is Michigan’s largest state park. Near our campground, The Lake of the Clouds Overlook is the most popular spot.

Next, we headed over to the western side of the park and hiked the Presque Isle River Loop trail. This hike features several cascading waterfalls and a rocky beach where the river flows into Lake Superior.

The Porkies would be amazing to see in late September or early October when the colors change.

Next up is Door County, Wisconsin!
