Winslow Memorial Park & Portland, ME

We’ve finally made it to Maine! Our first stop was Winslow Memorial Park in Freeport, about 20 minutes north of Portland. The campground is in a city park and a little on the expensive side for dry camping, but look at that view of Casco Bay. We loved it.

All these islands we’re seeing along the Maine coastline are so interesting. There aren’t bridges but you can see that the bigger ones have houses and even roads on them.

It was fun to watch people clamming at low tide.

The park is very popular with locals walking dogs, kids playing at the beach, and weekend tent campers.

It was a rainy Memorial Day weekend but we didn’t mind because of our awesome view from our campsite. And we spent a lot of time shopping in Freeport. The LL Bean flagship store and some other outlets are there. There are also several highly rated breweries and we decided to try Maine Beer Company.

The weather on Memorial Day was perfect so we set out to explore Portland. We started out at Bug Light Park, which has a great view of Portland’s downtown and waterfront areas.

These lighthouses are Bug Light (L) and Spring Point Ledge (R).

We finished our Portland light house tour with the Portland Head Light at Fort Williams Park. It’s Maine’s oldest lighthouse and is one of the most iconic and photographed. You can see the Ram Island Ledge lighthouse out in the distance.

We tried potato donuts from The Holy Donut, which were good, but we weren’t convinced they are “the way donuts should be”. We also had lobster rolls and a whoopie pie from Bite Into Maine.

We spent the rest of the day walking around the Portland’s Old Port neighborhood.

Next up is Acadia National Park!
